MUI Group Partners with Fusionex to Launch Metrojaya’s Digital Marketplace
MUI Group, a renowned player in the retail industry, has announced a strategic partnership with Fusionex Group to launch the Metrojaya online marketplace. This collaboration, aimed at enhancing the shopping experience, will see the digital marketplace go live in early December.
Partnership to Redefine Retail
The partnership was officially sealed during a signing ceremony held at Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur. MUI Group, which operates Metrojaya under its retail arm MJ Department Stores Sdn Bhd, aims to adapt to shifting consumer behavior and technological advancements in retail.
Andrew Khoo, MUI Group’s Chairman and CEO, emphasized the importance of reinventing Metrojaya’s presence to stay relevant in today’s fast-evolving market. He remarked, “Metrojaya has been a pioneer in the retail landscape for 47 years. Now, we are at a turning point where embracing digital transformation is crucial to staying ahead.”
Khoo also highlighted the value of partnering with Fusionex, an award-winning technology provider known for its expertise in big data. “This collaboration is a perfect fusion of our deep retail experience with Fusionex’s advanced technology. Together, we aim to revolutionize the online retail sector,” he added.
Expanding the Marketplace with Endless Possibilities
The new Metrojaya marketplace will operate as an omnichannel platform, similar to major e-commerce players like Shopee, Lazada, and Zalora. Khoo mentioned that the marketplace will initially feature Metrojaya’s loyal concessionaires, a long-time relationship that will now be expanded into the digital space. “We will offer a wide variety of products and services, including hospitality, medical, and educational goods in the future. The potential for growth is endless.”
A new mobile app will also be launched, offering customers rewards through redemptions and promotions to enhance engagement and improve the overall shopping experience.
Fusionex’s Vision for a Sustainable, Customer-Centric Platform
Fusionex CEO Datuk Seri Ivan Teh shared that the technology powering the Metrojaya marketplace will be designed with customer experience in mind. The platform will use insights to understand consumer behavior and optimize the shopping experience. Teh also emphasized the commitment to sustainability, including using recycled packaging and materials to ensure the platform aligns with environmental goals.
“While the Metrojaya marketplace shares some features with other e-commerce platforms like Lazada and Shopee, it stands apart due to the high-quality standards we uphold for our merchants. Our priority is to build consumer trust by ensuring only genuine products are sold,” said Teh.
Empowering Local Businesses and Entrepreneurs
Another key aspect of the Metrojaya online marketplace is its focus on supporting local businesses. The platform will feature Malaysian merchants, suppliers, and partners, helping create a thriving local ecosystem. The partnership with Fusionex will also streamline delivery and payment systems, ensuring a seamless and cost-effective experience for both sellers and buyers.
Khoo further elaborated on the impact this platform will have on young entrepreneurs. “This marketplace allows aspiring entrepreneurs to enter the digital world with lower costs and risks. It is a great opportunity for them to build businesses and positively impact society.”
Digital Transformation and Shrinking Physical Footprint
As part of the digital shift, Metrojaya will also reassess its physical stores. Khoo acknowledged that the company would be downsizing its retail space but emphasized that the focus would be on securing new, strategically located stores, such as those at IOI City Mall. “It’s not just about the size of the store, but how we approach the mix of tenants and adapt to the times,” said Khoo.
In conclusion, this digital transformation represents a major step for Metrojaya as it embraces e-commerce and innovation. Through its partnership with Fusionex, the company is positioning itself to meet the needs of modern shoppers while supporting local entrepreneurs and fostering sustainable practices.
